Implementation

Children are taught in small groups which reflect their phonic knowledge and reading fluency. We regularly assess children so they are taught in a RWI group which matches their phonic knowledge. We make sure that children read books that are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and ability to read ‘tricky words’; so they experience early reading success and gain confidence in themselves as readers.

In practice, we teach children to:

· Decode letter-sound correspondences quickly and effortlessly, using their phonic knowledge and skills;
· Read common exception words on sight;
· Understand what they read;
· Read aloud with fluency and expression;
· Write confidently, with a strong focus on vocabulary and grammar;
· Spell quickly and easily by segmenting the sounds in words;
· Acquire good handwriting.

Lessons are delivered with:

·         Pace – good pace is essential to the lesson

·         Praise/Positive Teaching – children learn more effectively in a positive climate

·         Purpose – every part of the lesson has a specific purpose.

·         Participation - a strong feature of RWI lessons is partner work (based on research which states that we learn 70% of what we talk about with our partner)

·         Passion – It is the energy, enthusiasm and passion that group leaders put into the lesson that bring the teaching and learning to life!

Impact

The result of phonics teaching at our school will be that pupils will have a secure knowledge of phonics, enabling them to become confident readers, making expected progress or more, with a life-long love of reading.

Pupils will be able to apply their phonic knowledge to confidently spell many words either correctly or phonetically using the sounds they have learnt. They will know spelling alternatives for different sounds and be able to apply these consistently.
