Intent

History is a foundation subject within the National Curriculum. The aims of teaching History at Intake School are consistent with our school philosophy and take account of the breadth and depth of our school aims and everyone achieving their full potential.

As a school, we encourage children to learn about history using a wide range of sources. We would like the children to:-

  • understand the process of change, the differences in societies and the challenges of their time;
  • develops skills of critical thinking enabling them to make reasoned judgements that are logical, well thought out and refer back to their prior learning;
  • challenge and question evidence and arguments in order to develop a perspective and their own judgements;
  • build a sense of identity and belonging on a personal, cultural, national and global level and consequently understand more about themselves and as members of society;
  • understand cause and consequence, similarity and difference, continuity and change, change and progress/regression, significance, evidence, chronology, empathy, context, diversity, perspective, interconnectivity and validity which have broad relevance and significance in the modern world;
  • Encourage an interest in the past and develop skills which will help promote life-long learning.
